One of the easiest ways to fool yourself in growth is to confuse a local lift with a finished product decision.
The test wins.
The metric moves.
The dashboard screenshot gets passed around.
Everyone feels the relief of having something that worked.
That is usually the moment when I get more cautious, not less.
Because a lot of experiments do not end cleanly.
They leave residue.
A flag nobody wants to own.
A weird support exception that only exists because of the treatment.
A sharper CTA that performs well but quietly changes the promise.
A setup shortcut that boosts completion while creating downstream cleanup for the user.
A lifecycle message that drives return traffic while making the in-product state feel stranger when people arrive.
The test may still be worth shipping.
But if nobody studies the residue, the team can accidentally promote temporary scaffolding into the long-term product.
I think that is one of the more under-discussed parts of growth craft.
A winning experiment can still leave the room messier than it found it
This is different from asking whether the experiment was statistically sound.
That still matters, obviously.
Ron Kohavi and the broader experimentation community have written a lot about trustworthy online controlled experiments, and for good reason. It is easy to get the measurement wrong, the metric wrong, or the interpretation wrong.
But even a trustworthy win can create a second product question.
What extra work did this treatment leave behind for the product, the team, and the user.
Growth teams often treat that as an implementation detail.
I do not think it is.
If the lift depends on cleanup debt, support workarounds, or awkward long-lived flags, that is part of the result.
Not because the idea is invalid.
Because the product has to carry the whole thing after the experiment team moves on.
That is where product judgment has to re-enter the room.
Trails, operating rooms, and software all have a version of closeout
One reason I like this frame is that other domains take cleanup more seriously than product teams often do.
Hikers are taught Leave No Trace for a reason. The quality of a trip is not only whether you reached the overlook. It is also whether you left damage, trash, and confusion behind for the next person.
Operating rooms have their own version in the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist. Before the room turns over, the team confirms the count, the labels, and the next steps. The point is not ceremony. The point is to avoid carrying avoidable mess into the next phase.
Software has a similar lesson in Pete Hodgson’s piece on feature toggles. Flags are useful. They also have carrying cost. If the test ships but the flag, branch logic, and special cases stay forever, the organization keeps paying rent on an old decision.
I think growth product work needs the same habit.
Do not only ask whether the treatment lifted.
Ask what it disturbed.
Ask what has to be restored, removed, renamed, or made durable before this becomes the real product.
Residue usually hides in ordinary places
The tricky part is that experiment residue rarely looks dramatic.
It shows up in plain places.
The onboarding copy now overpromises relative to the steady-state experience.
The treatment worked because sales and support manually patched confusion behind the scenes.
The extra prompt improved conversion, but now the first session feels more brittle when a teammate joins later.
The lifecycle email pulled people back, but the return state in product still assumes they remember what happened last week.
The shortcut increased setup completion, but the downstream workspace is now cluttered with half-configured objects the user has to clean up.
The experiment was targeted to one high-intent segment, but the shipped version would expose the same move to everyone.
These are not footnotes.
They are part of the product cost.
And if you do not write them down while the readout is fresh, the team almost always remembers the lift more vividly than the residue.
The artifact I like is a residue log
This is a small closeout artifact for any test that might graduate into the product.
Not for every tiny copy change on earth.
For the experiments that alter user expectations, account state, workflow shape, or operational burden in a meaningful way.

- What part of the treatment created the lift
- What part of the treatment was likely temporary scaffolding
- What new support, sales, or success work appeared during the test
- What user confusion was absorbed by humans rather than solved in product
- What state, settings, or content the treatment left behind in accounts
- What promises the treatment copy made that the steady-state product still needs to honor
- What flags, segment rules, or branching logic would remain if shipped
- What segments were protected during the test that would not be protected after rollout
- What cleanup work must happen before this becomes the default experience
- What evidence suggests the residue is acceptable, fixable, or too costly
That list is usually enough.
The point is not to create a post-launch ritual that drags for days.
The point is to stop acting like a winning graph is the whole decision.
This changes the conversation in a useful way
Once a team has a residue log, a few good things happen.
You get a cleaner distinction between the idea and the shipping shape of the idea.
You notice when a lift depended on unusually attentive human backup.
You get stricter about whether a fast onboarding win is really worth the downstream clutter it creates.
You can separate a durable product improvement from a clever but expensive intervention.
You also get a better way to have an honest discussion with engineering and design.
Not, did the test work.
But, what has to be true for this to deserve a permanent place in the product.
I like that question because it respects experimentation without worshipping it.
The experiment is a way of learning.
It is not a free pass around product stewardship.
The product remembers what the team forgets
That may be the simplest reason I keep coming back to this.
Teams move on quickly.
Products do not.
The product keeps the copy.
The product keeps the weird state.
The product keeps the cleanup burden.
The product keeps the user expectation that was set during the treatment.
That is why I think growth PMs should build a closeout reflex, not only a launch reflex.
If a test wins, great.
Write down what it left behind before everyone rushes to call it finished.
That is often where the real product decision begins.
